"Special Mothers": During the civil war in the Congo, women were violated and raped as a weapon of war, often in front of their husbands and children. These atrocities forced women to be put out of their families, to "cleanse" their homes, even though they were innocent victims. Afterwards they needed emotional, spiritual and financial support. Some even required surgeries. In support of these innocent victims of war, Open Word collected almost two tons of toiletry bags from churches and transported them by air freight to the Congo. This was to assure these Special Mothers that someone loved them and understood their plight. It was to the women in the picture that Fern Crouch Willner preached, "What aileth thee Hagar?", the story of how Hagar was forced out of Abraham's home. (Genesis 21:9-21)
